Tharaka Women's and Children's Programme
The Tharaka Children and Women Project in Marimanti is supporting 36 children at Kamatungu and
other Primary Schools in the area, and 14 children in Secondary
Schools. The new Headmaster at Kamatungu school, where the project is based, has changed the school
completely.
- The girls dormitory has been completed.
- The kitchen has been cleaned, reorganised and extended.
- All but one of the classroom floors have been concreted and sealed.
- A covered veranda built the whole length of the school.
- The compound tidied and made safe.
- Solar power has been installed via the Methodist Time
Travellers project. This provides light in the classrooms and
dormitories.
A minister and his wife from Churches in Devon went on one of the working parties this
year. Money from Churches in Devon provided a water
pump and piping, new desks and mosquito nets. Unfortunately the
drought this year was very damaging and the cattle were dying or unable
to produce milk. Although the Karibuni Trust is officially only
sponsoring a total of 50 children the whole school population remains at
risk because of the fragility of the local economy.
The women continue to
make very attractive baskets. Karibuni has some of these to sell at £6 each.
