GREAT WALL of CHINA WALK RAISES OVER £7800 for KARIBUNI
“A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step.
Lynn and Karen’s journey started last February when they sat down and made
their plans to raise money for the Karibuni Trust by trekking on The
Great Wall of China. The next step came when they had their very first
fund raising events, a dinner party and the next day a garden party in
Harrow, suddenly it had all begun. The generosity of our friends and
family with their gifts of time and money never failed to amaze us.
Incredibly the target that they set themselves was reached and exceeded,
so they set a bigger target.
It felt like months before the trek but it
soon turned into weeks, then days and then a journey to Heathrow with two
enormous rucksacks.
On the second of April Lynn and Karen stepped aboard the plane for their 10
hour flight to Beijing not quite knowing what to expect but they were
strangely excited at the prospect. For the next five days Lynn and
Karen’s steps were certainly challenged by the wall which in most
places resembles stacked rubble not the paved passage you see on the
holiday programmes. It is also very steep; there are no safety rails to
protect you from the near vertical drops, crawling sometimes took the
place of stepping. The weather was both hot and humid so our two intrepid
trekkers had to work very hard for every step that they took. Also they
had the chance to encounter the Chinese way of life, very alien to
anything we would know but one thing remained constant, the friendliness
of every one they met. There was a strong bond between the trekker’s
who were all raising funds for a diverse range of charities, they have
all shared in a ‘life changing’ experience.
Lynne and Karen have raised about £7,800 to date,
after paying expenses to Charity Challenge who organised the
event.
'Charity challenge organises sponsored fund-raising
events across the world - 'Trekking with the Maasai in Tanzania'; 'Walking along
the Great China Wall'; 'Cycling in Morocco' and many other challenging
