Erick has been sponsored throughout his University education by a Karibuni supporter. Here is his story, written by Erick:
My name is Erick Obudho. I work as an Audit Associate with KPMG Kenya within its Public Sector & Development (PSD) department. My work majorly entails audits of International Non-Governmental Organizations in Kenya and the wider East African Region. My interest in donor work is one of the lasting effects that Karibuni Children instilled in me. Karibuni made me believe that donor support has the power to completely transform an individual’s life.
My journey with Karibuni starts way back in 1998. I was lucky to be amongst its first batch of beneficiaries in Kibera. Coming from a very humble background, my only ticket out of poverty was education. However, I could not have used this ticket were it not for Karibuni. They supported me throughout my education.
I did my Secondary school national exams (Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education) in 2010 at Lang’ata High School; scoring an impressive grade of A-(minus). This earned me a scholarship to study Bachelor of Commerce (Finance) at the prestigious Strathmore University. I graduated in June 2015 with a First Class honours. All through this, Karibuni walked with me even paying for my Certified Public Accountants (CPA) exams which I also did complete in June 2014.
It is out of the support that they showed that I founded the Karibuni Alumni Association. I brought together beneficiaries of the project who are in various institutions of Higher Learning with those in various career fields to provide mentorship to the beneficiaries in Secondary School. Each of us has been assigned a mentee(s). We meet the mentees when they are on holiday. Our role basically is to provide a guiding lamp that shines their path as they journey through High School.
Karibuni has been a God-send gift. The power of education to which they bestowed on me has completely changed my history. Though they may not be able to save the whole world but the very act of saving one individual may mean the whole world to that individual. And that individual is me. And I represent the very many lives that Karibuni Children is transforming positively in various parts of Kenya.
