Upendu Women’s Orphan Project

Project leader Mrs Grace Anzazi

Karibuni Trust gives an annual grant which in 2011 will be £2,500 to help to support 23 orphans in the church Nursery and local Government Primary Schools. All the children are given 3 meals a day at the project, are provided with uniforms, books and education.

With the assistance of a Scottish woman who works in a research establishment in Kilifi, they now have a superb suite of premises for the nursery children, kitchens for food preparation, offices and toilets.

People from Sheffield Pilgrim Methodist Circuit gave the women money to start a tree nursery, print T-shirts and biros to be income generating. The T-shirts and pens project had limited success because local people could not afford to buy them, but the tree nursery is thriving. The women have also worked very hard to get local businesses to support them and had grants from the National Council of Churches Kenya.

They also provide after-school care for Primary School children, offering counselling for children and guardians. They have challenged themselves to increase the number of sponsored children to 30, and educate them right through Primary School.

This is an excellent programme with dedicated women volunteers.
