Wesley Empowerment Centre, Njoro
In 1998 many families were displaced by tribal clashes. Families were chased from their farms, their
homes razed to the ground, the men were beaten, some to death, and the women abused. Many of the
displaced people now live in a shanty slum at Njoro, near Nakuru in the Rift Valley. There is no work
and no benefits.
Njoro Nursery School, part of the Wesley Empowerment Centre, is helping
children from the families. 82 children are fed, clothed, educated and
having medical care at the nursery and 49 children at the local Primary
Schools go to the nursery for lunch each day. Karibuni is sponsoring 48
of these children.
With the help of a substantial loan/grant
from Karibuni the school has bought the site where the project is situated. They
can now develop the work, particularly among the growing number of older
children who have missed out on Primary Education and need some skills
training for the future. Now the plot of land between their present plot
and the road has come on the market and Karibuni has provided a part
loan/part grant to purchase it.
New classrooms are now in full use and
have made a significant difference to the children and staff. Estimates are being produced for a new
bore-hole to provide clean water for the community. This should be up
and running soon. Thanks to Short Cross Methodist Church for
their generosity in raising over £20,000 for this project.

Kenya by a group of Karibuni Trust supporters. For more information on

The carers and young people are starting a small business. They now have 2
donkeys and carts and a bike taxi (boda-boda) thanks to a firm of
Wimbledon Accountants.
