Kawangware Academy
Kawangware Academy is in a shanty slum in Nairobi and it provides both Nursery and Primary
education. Most of the children are fee-paying but Karibuni Trust is sponsoring 36 of the poorest
children in the area and paying for their food, uniforms, fees, books,
etc.

There are some children at all the nursery projects who arrive on Monday
mornings not having eaten since Friday lunchtime!
Seminars help the
carers of the children to learn about basic childcare, nutrition,
safety, etc., and a micro-finance scheme has started to help the carers
become self supporting.
The local people have
built 4 temporary classrooms to provide rooms up to standard 8 to
replace an old church building which had previously been used as a
nursery.
Karibuni is providing food
for the 75 nursery children there five days a week in
partnership with the Kawangware Academy. Because the teachers saw that
the children returned from holidays in a very poor nutritional state,
unable to learn and needing weeks to catch up again, a holiday feeding
programme has now started at both these projects for the sponsored
children.
