Embakasi Nursery School

This is a small Nursery School within the Methodist Church compound in Embakasi, a large industrial town close to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport where casual work is available for unskilled labour but only intermittently. There is a slum area in Embakasi about 10 minutes walk from the Nursery.

Karibuni is sponsoring 25 of the poorest children from the local slum area. It is also paying 75% of the costs of uniforms and books for 15 children at the Primary School and provides lunch for them.

The Nursery building is a simple tin hut comprising two separate classrooms and this has now been boarded. A false ceiling has also been installed and these two quite basic modifications have made an enormous difference to both light and noise. This was one of the tasks started by the Karibuni work team and was finished by the local people. The hut has been re-decorated with pictures of various animals and other objects, corresponding to each letter of the alphabet. They now have electricity and running water on-site saving the staff a long walk to collect water. A new toilet block with flush toilets and hand basins has replaced the old pit latrines.

Time Travellers, a project for the children in the Methodist Church in the UK to raise money for children in the projects in the Methodist Church in Kenya, provided the Nursery School with play and learning equipment.
